An 'aggressive adherence to whiteness' indeed! I'm not sure that one hot-button political issue was discussed. Not the economy, not the war in Iraq, not Afghanistan. All these Republicans talked about were race, religion, and terrorism. I guess rural isolation, racial homogeneity, limited education, and a black presidential candidate can turn normal people into abnormally mean voters. Oh yeah, the Holy Spirit in Palin may have contributed as well...
As scary to me as the bigotry articulated was the Christian fundamentalism expressed by most interviewed. I guess 'Christ', 'white', and 'right' have more in common than the long-I vowel sound. I could probably quote any number of black intellectuals who have pointed out the contradiction in having a (white) Christian nation replete with white terrorists and racists, but why? Do the Christians in the clip not demonstrate the perversity of America’s faith? "Do unto others as you would have done unto you" has always meant something different in America.
Finally, the white Obama supporter is not the only one afraid for Obama's safety. His wife is. Rev. Al Sharpton is. I am. History tells us that strong black leaders never last as long as their movements. Already, some white terrorists have been arrested for plots to kill the Democratic nominee. The closer we get to the election the more fearful I am to turn on CNN. Wouldn’t another assassination be a travesty? Whether you want to vote Obama or not, his life speaks to the life of America, and his death would speak to—I’ll let you conclude the thought…
